This year my birthday, which was on Tuesday, will be a memorable one.

For unfortunate reasons, Andy couldn’t be here for my birthday.  Andy’s grandpa passed away New year’s day.   We had to make the tough decision not to put the kids back in the car so all of us could attend the funeral.  We just thought it was too much to put them through a 6.5 hour car ride each way.  So Andy flew back on his own on Tuesday.

I felt awful that me and the kids weren’t there for the wake on Tuesday and the funeral on Wednesday.  I wasn’t worried that no one would understand, I knew they would, but I still felt bad.

First thing that morning when Maddy woke up she knew it was my birthday, she said “its your birthday today Mommy!”  She had thought it was the day before and had woken up that day asking as well, so cute.

That day we hung out with some friends, talked to people on the phone, shoveled the driveway and frosted the cake.

When we picked  Hayden up from the bus, I had a plan for dinner and it didn’t involve me cooking.  We went and picked up pizza and breadsticks and had an early dinner.  I know super healthy eating, but hey it was my birthday.

Then we opened up my gifts.   Andy had given me my big present early, a new GF1 Lumix camera.  But he did leave a bag of Peanut butter M&M’s and a card in my car that morning, as a little surprise for me.  He said the M&M’s were to get me through the next 24 hours, cute!  My sister got me a gift card to one of my favorite stores, TJ Maxx.  And my parents big gift to me….

A Kitchenaid Professional mixer.  I can’t wait to bake something in it, I love to bake!

After that we had some cake and the kids went off to read books.  Or so I thought.

They hadn’t been gone more than a  minute when I heard Maddy throw up.  She came running to me, crying and threw up all over me, mostly water.  I took her to the bathroom where she threw up a little bit more.  None of it amounted to much of anything, mostly liquid.  But seriously?  Who could make this up.

Turns out Hayden and her were spinning around for that one minute, she started to cough and I think gagged herself and then threw up.  And then continued to freak out and threw up again and again.

Lovely.

So the next 45 minutes were spent changing Maddy into PJ’s, and cleaning up throw up off the floor.  All the while I am doing this, I am praying that it is a fluke and Maddy doesn’t have the stomach bug that is going around.  I just couldn’t handle that on my birthday.

It turned out to be a fluke. And I was never so grateful.

It was a pretty good day, well except for that whole throw up incident but that does make it memorable.

Sounds like a pretty great day – minus the throw up but like you said that is what makes it memorable!

    How is the camera?

Kids spinning around sends me into cold sweats.

Happy birthday…sounds like you made the best of it and carb loaded a little bit (who could blame you?). Thoughts to you and your husband’s family…loss is a tough shadow to get out from under.
