Hayden’s birthday fell on a Thursday, so he was at school most of the day.

That morning he got to open his presents first thing.  I kept a couple things for the car ride that afternoon as a surprise

We  snuck his new recycled desk into his room after he got up – that was a big surprise when we told him to go up to his room for something.  It’s the silly little things like that I love doing.

That night we picked him up from the bus stop and headed to a local mall where there is an indoor amusement park.  On your birthday, kids ride free all day.  We also happened to have two free wrist bands from about two years ago (I know crazy we hadn’t used them).  Since Maddy is still little, she needed a chaperone so I rode for free, score!

On the ride there I had two small gifts for Hayden, love that he was totally shocked.  One wasn’t on his list of things he would like, I went out on a limb.  He was quiet after he opened it.  I asked him if he liked it (clearly I could tell he wasn’t a big fan.)  He said, “I like it.”  But I could tell it wasn’t a hit so I told him I wouldn’t be upset if he didn’t like it.

He said “It isn’t my favorite but I didn’t want to hurt your feelings.”

When we got out of the car, he melted my heart   He said “I am having the best birthday because I am with you Mommy, and Daddy and Maddy.  I love you!”

We ate first and gave Hayden the choice of eating at a fast food type restaurant or a sit down place.  We were surprised that he choose sit down.  We figured he would want all the time to go on the rides.

He choose a restaurant that has these gorilla’s in it that move.  Maddy was not a fan, so dinner was a bit rocky with her sitting in a lap with her sweatshirt hood pulled over her face.  She is still talking about that restaurant and how she never wants to go back.

Snapped this picture on the way to the rides, I have always wanted his picture in front of this sign.  Only wish I would have had my nicer camera

We split up for a bit, Maddy isn’t quite ready to tackle roller coasters.  Frankly I was expecting her to not want to go on any rides.   If you remember she wasn’t big into rides for Disney just a couple months ago.

Hayden went on all but one of the roller coasters…

and had a blast!

Maddy went on the Carousel…four times.  We also went on a bunch of the other little kid rides, I think the balloon one might have been her favorite.

Periodically we would meet up with our boys, Hayden went on the carousel with Maddy and I.  And then the boys said that they wanted to do the ropes course.  It is way up high and basically like tightropes, with harnesses and an overhead lanyard hooked to a track.  Hayden tried it last year and made it to level 2 before wanting to come down.  I frankly wouldn’t want to do this at all, way too high up for me.  But Hayden wanted to try it again.

Excuse the super grainy picture.  Here they are on level 1.

Hayden made it all the way to the top, which I think is level 4 or 5 – you are basically very close to the steel girders at the mall roof.

When we met up with them again, Hayden was so proud of himself that he made it to the top.  Like father like son.   I think an indoor rock climbing wall will be on the agenda this summer.

It was a wonderful night.

Lucky boy! Sounds like a great day and so gratifying when they show appreciation. Love that he was happy spending it with his family! Curious what the two small gifts were in the car that he didn’t really like.

@For the Love of Naps – Sarah, One gift he loved, a jump rope. The one he didn’t was scooby doo action figures. He likes to watch scooby doo but he just wasn’t a big fan of the figures. Win some, loose some.
