First week of school 2013

The first week of school is almost behind us.  Hayden started 4th grade on Monday.  Maddy started Kindergarten on Tuesday.

Dropping Hayden off that first day felt different than last year.  Last year it was his first year at a new school and in a new program.  This year I knew he felt comfortable and had friends to see.  When I pulled up to drop him off he spotted a good friend right away and away he went without a backwards glance.

This week has been hard, Hayden’s school has been without air conditioning, due to renovations that got behind schedule,  up till late afternoon yesterday.   Mother nature decided that this was the week to have record heat, I am talking 95 degrees with 105 heat indexes those first 4 days of school.  That alone had me worrying about him daily.  When I asked him this week is it hot in the classrooms?  He said “yes it is hot, but there is no use in complaining, everyone is hot, so what is the point.”  That is my logical son.  His teachers have been amazing, bringing treats for the kids twice, along with the principal for the entire school.  I brought popsicles one day for his class and was amazed at two things:  how hot it was in the teachers lounge (I would guess about 85 degrees) and the amount of freezie pops and popsicles bursting from three freezers.

Needless to say it has been a memorable start to Hayden’s school year.  Homework has made its way back into our house, mainly math for now.  Hello 4-6pm homework hours, I haven’t missed you.

Maddy had Kindergarten orientation on Monday.  She goes in the mornings for Kindergarten.  On her first day I walked her up to the upstairs where Kindergarten was and gave her some hugs and sent her on her way.  She turned around a few steps away and ran back for another hug.  She did a few turn arounds as she walked to her classroom and then she was gone.  She did tell me that she felt scared when she got to her classroom that first day.    The second and third days were better with today being a little harder again.

She is finding her way with new friends.  She doesn’t really have any close friends coming into Kindergarten like she did for preschool.   I know it will take time for her to adjust.  It is good for her, but I can’t say it is easy for my mama heart to hear that her new friend didn’t want to play with her today.  Next week is a new week, we will see what it brings for her.

It’s going to be a great school year, I can feel it.
