You’ve heard of the 5 senses, sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing.  But there is another one, that I know a lot of us moms have.  Its what I call the Mom sense.

Its that feeling  you get when something isn’t right with one of your children, or that feeling that going to “X” place just isn’t a good idea today.  It is a nagging feeling that I get in the back of my mind.  When it is for something foolish, I have a tendency to ignore it, and yet then I realize I was right and should have listened.

This feeling has crept up on me twice in the past three days.  Friday afternoon Hayden got off the bus and was complaining that his throat hurt, I thought at this point he was getting a cold.  It wasn’t until the 4:30am wake up call on Saturday, that I got that feeling something wasn’t right, Hayden’s throat hurt and now he had a fever.  I got up with Hayden after an hour or trying to get him to go back to sleep after I gave him motrin.

I was set to take him to the doctor’s office Saturday AM when they opened.  But then Andy got up and we talked, and we decided together that yes, in the past, he had never had strep throat.  So we waited.

Sunday morning, we got another wake up call at 3:10am.  This time after giving him some motrin and laying with him, I got him back down, but he had, had a fever now for 24 hours.

I decided Sunday AM when we rose we needed to take him in to urgent care.  Andy was still not sure if we should, but went along with me.  Turns out, I was right, Hayden had strep throat.

Today I had that same feeling, only it was for something silly.  I didn’t want to go to the bank to get something out of our safe deposit box with Maddy.  I didn’t know why, but I found out soon enough.  After 30 minutes of waiting, because they couldn’t find a piece of paper with our info on it, I was allowed to get into my box.

Lesson learned – I will now be paying closer attention to that nagging feeling.

I hope Hayden is feeling better. Yes, the mom sense is so valuable…the tricky thing is listening to it and feeling confident in the choice to listen.

Absolutely! Just how I can look at my kids and know that something is not quite right.
